The Sand Bowl

This is a very short side pocket in the side of the canyon in which the light is penetrating. Water erosion from the top and primarily from the major canyon flow have caused a whirlpool.
The result over centuries is the dark purple bowl, seen here full of sand that drifts in from the upper desert floor and is also left from the last flood in the canyon.
